We have brought down dictatorship, now we must jump into building an effective democratic state: Mirza Fakhrul
He extended his heartfelt greetings and congratulations to the democracy-loving people of the world on this day. Mirza Fakhrul mentioned that if the practice of democracy continues, no tyranny can rise. He said, democracy is a system of governance where the people can participate in exercising sovereign power. In democracy, the will of the people is considered important. Elected representatives strive to serve and reach fair decisions. If the practice of democracy continues, no tyranny can rise. And that is why it has not been possible to turn the people into slaves. The BNP Secretary General mentioned that the black claws of one-party rule are still prevalent in various countries. In this context, he said, for a decade and a half, a disastrous Awami fascist regime was in place in Bangladesh, taking away civil liberties, voting rights, human dignity and human rights. Freedom of the press was taken away through various old laws, and many people were subjected to extrajudicial killings including disappearances and murders due to dissent. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, an uncompromising fighter for the movement to establish democracy in Bangladesh, was imprisoned on false and fabricated cases. BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who is firmly committed to democracy, was subjected to the barbaric torture of being sentenced on false cases. Mirza Fakhrul said that although the countrymen have gone through 16 years of terrible hardship and achieved victory through the historic bloodbath movement in July-August last year, full democracy has not yet arrived. Free, open and impartial elections are part of democracy. To make democracy permanent, the continuity of impartial elections must be ensured. Real democracy is not possible without decentralization of state power, universal education and social justice. The BNP Secretary General mentioned the theme of this year’s International Day of Democracy in his message. He said that in a democratic state and society, women and men or any other gender are guaranteed equal participation and benefits. Democracy cannot increase any discrimination against anyone on the basis of gender; Rather, it is possible to ensure equal legal and social rights for everyone.
